The CS-1 is intended for use where sonic neutrality is of primary concern. It allows you to record straight from the mike to the recording device, bypassing the mixing console on the record side of the signal path. The CS-1 may also be used during a mixing session by using its line level input. Although the CS-1 is not an effects box, it does include a highly musical three band all parametric EQ section, HPF and Polarity Reverse switching, and an opto compressor with full time gain reduction metering. The output stage of the CS-1 includes a simple level control, a mute switch, a Class A buffer amp, and a VU meter. The VU meter can monitor either the main output level or input preamp level as selected by a front panel switch, allowing easy adjustment of the preamp gain and output level controls. A post EQ peak light provides warning of of EQ amp overload when large amounts of EQ are dialed in, or overload of the input stage when the EQ is switched out.
All of the CS-1's main signal path amplifiers are Class A discrete Junction FET (JFET amplifiers). There are no IC opamps, bipolar transistors, or audio transformers used in the CS-1. When used with line level signals or with non-phantom powered microphones, there are no capacitors in the main signal path of the CS-1.
When phantom power is required, a high quality capacitor is switched into the signal path to block the phantom power from the CS-1's input stage amplifiers. This DC coupling of non-phantom powered microphones is ideal for use with high quality ribbon microphones.
